A Note From The President

Thank you for taking the time to look at our e-newsletter. This is our second edition and I wanted to give an overview of what the purpose of the RMIMA is and who is involved. We are a professional organization, addressing issues revolving around Information Technology. We are an outreach organization that is involved in the business community, education and government. We are a networking organization that helps people involved in Information Technology make the contacts that allow them to find employment. We are an education vehicle, giving monthly topical presentations by experts in their respective fields.

I am happy to report the RMIMA Board of Directors has planned our monthly presentation topics for the rest of our year. In November we will have Paul Gustafson talking about Extreme Data. December will be our Annual Employment Panel with Bill Hubbell from Microsoft moderating panel members representing government, education and the business community.

I would like to direct you to our web site: http://www.rmima.org/  We use this web site to educate people about the RMIMA. Please visit it to see the quality of our upcoming events and sign up for them.

To conclude, I would like to personally thank our sponsors of our Annual
Employment Panel coming up in December: Sunrise Medical Inc., The Uptime Group Inc., Connect: The Knowledge Network, and W3W3 radio. Without the support of these companies, the RMIMA would not be able to produce such an event as compelling as the Annual Employment Panel.

I would like to invite you to attend any of our events and please introduce
yourself to me so that I can introduce you to others.

Sincerely,

Sandra Songailaite
President, RMIMA

LEF Technology Programs presents Extreme Data: Rethinking the ‘I’ in IT
With Paul Gustafson
Director
November 14, 2006 at 10:30 am

It is remarkable how far we have come with digital information. Sensors can report the real-time status of an engine in the bowels of a ship so that costly emergency shut-downs can be avoided. Data from your car can report your actual driving behavior and (hopefully) lower your insurance rates. From your home PC you can access air quality and other EPA ratings for your town, or take an aerial “fly over” of your neighborhood or just about anywhere in the world. Location-based cell phone blogging is taking hold. You can even use your cell phone to check in for an airplane flight or, in the future, to take the place of a train ticket.

An information explosion is underway, giving rise to an era of extreme data and dramatic new applications. Extreme data is new types of data, generated by new devices, and being used in new ways - enabling new business processes, interpersonal connections, and knowledge for organizations and individuals. This session will explore four areas of extreme data: data everywhere, time and place, social connections and meaning.

October Luncheon

The October 10th luncheon topic was “What New Product Development Needs from IT”. This particular topic was presented by Scott R. Foust, Vice-President of Product and Business Development at First Data Corporation and two of his colleagues. There was a large turnout and during his presentation Scott and his colleagues handed out gift cards to various audience members for their participation and feedback.

Tech Week Recap

Governor Bill Owens kicked off the 2nd Annual Colorado Tech Week at a press conference at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science on Monday, September 18th. The week long series of statewide events, hosted by the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT), highlighted Colorado’s dynamic technology and its impact on the global economy.

“Colorado has become a global hub for technological innovation, and home to some of the industry’s most significant advances,” said Gov. Owens. “With the inspiration of natural beauty and lifestyle fueling innovation, Colorado in leading the technology industry across the chasm to the next phase of global development.”

Gov. Owens announced the creation of a Nanotechnology Alliance Roadmap for Colorado and outlined his administration’s accomplishments in the rising the fields of technology business development and education.

The Governor also presented the 2006 Advancing Colorado Excellence Award for Advancement of the Technology Community to Larry and Pat Nelson of w3w3 Media Network. The Nelsons have been tireless advocates of the state’s technology community through their efforts over many years supporting communications and networking between government, academia and non-profit industry associations.

One of the premier events of the week was RMIMA’s event on Tuesday, September 19th at the Red Lion Hotel. To a packed room, Richard Rokosz of Lockheed Martin Space Systems, addressed the issues of IT Governance, and Taking the IT organization to the next level.

A great picture overview of the week is available at www.w3w3.com, a proud partner of RMIMA.

CONNECT’s Power, Politics & Partnership Workshop
($495.00 value) FREE !
January 18 - 19, 2007

Large, ambitious strategic projects are rife with political issues. As part of our Human Performance Optimization™ practice, CONNECT: The Knowledge Network invites you to a powerful one and a half day event that will change the way you view these issues and improve your ability to manage, sponsor, be a customer of, or simply work on, large, cross-organizational projects.

Power, Politics & Partnership is a dynamic, yawn-free leadership development program. This in-house workshop focuses on the worlds of Tops, Middles, Bottoms and Customers during turbulent times. It gets to the heart of partnership in organization life - what makes partnership so critical, what gets in the way of it developing, and what the role of leaders is in making it happen. The centerpiece of the workshop is an organization exercise in which participants are dropped into roles as top executives, middle managers, workers and customers interacting in a chaotic, fast-paced environment. This visceral approach enables the learning to get beyond the head level to where it really hits home and sticks. Peer discussion reinforces the students’ learning.

For more information on this workshop, go to:
http://www.connectknowledge.com/news/events/ppp070118.html

In this drawing, only one (1) person will be qualified
To attend the CONNECT workshop held on January 18 - 19, 2007.

Company Spotlight - Consulate General of Canada

The Consulate General of Canada opened its doors in Denver in September 2004 to coordinate and augment Canada’s business development activities in the U.S. Rocky Mountain Corridor. The Consulate General of Canada in Denver is responsible for promoting trade and investment in the Rocky Mountain States of Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming. The Canada-Colorado trade relationship is very important to building Colorado’s economy as international trade with Canada supported 93,000 jobs in 2005 and bilateral trade from Canada to Colorado reached $3.4 billion dollars. Total exports from Colorado to Canada totalled $847 million dollars in 2005, and Canada remains Colorado’s #1 international market destination for its products. Direct investment by Canada into Colorado is approximately $5 billion (Cad), and the message about Colorado’s world-class ski resorts has also been reaching Canada as Canadians made 119,000 visits in 2005, and spent $71 million during their visits to Colorado.

Canada is a world leader in technology innovations, and our neighbors to the north continue to lead the way in the development of innovative wireless solutions for the global economy. The Consulate is interested in working with RMIMA members in identifying potential technology partnerships and collaborations that make Canada and Colorado stronger together.

For more information about doing business with Canada, please contact David Smith, Trade Commissioner, Consulate General of Canada. He can be contacted via e-mail at denvr-td@international.gc.ca
